Long, level lines beside water
The bicycle is the correct instrument for a country that refuses hills. Wind, surface and stopping points matter more than gears.
Four lines worth knowing by name
These are not race courses. They are landscape sentences: lake, meadow, reed, wood. Distances are honest; times assume a touring pace with weather pauses. For place context read Steinhuder Meer, Dümmer See and the Weser floodplains.

Wind is the elevation
On a dike you do not climb in metres; you climb in newtons of air. A west wind on the Lake Loop can turn the south shore into a long argument and the north shore into a gift. Start into the wind if you can. Carry a shell even in July. The same rule applies on Dümmer, only the audience is geese rather than sailors.
Surface quality is generally kind to touring tyres and unkind to racing pressure. After rain the Forest & Water Line around Rehburg picks up peat-dark mud; the lake dike stays rideable. Seasonal closures for breeding are real — if a sign blocks a reed shortcut, that is the landscape working, not a failure of tourism. Details live in the wildlife chapter and the field glossary.
Kit that actually matters: windbreaker, rain cape, comfortable shoes you can walk in, water, binoculars, sun protection, offline map. A regional train home is part of the route design, not a backup. Slot any of these lines into the five-day itinerary without inventing extra kilometres for pride.
Coverage on the Lake Loop is mostly packed gravel and asphalt-equivalent dike crown; after frost there can be a film of mud that is ugly but rideable. The Reed Shore Route is more exposed: fewer trees, more agricultural gates, more reason to start early if you want the water without tractor traffic. The Weser Meadow Ride is the one that benefits most from a train in one direction so you can keep the river on a chosen shoulder. None of these lines need a mountain bike. They need patience at gates and a willingness to walk a short boardwalk rather than force a tyre through a conservation gap.
